The Luxury Lighting Guide.

Lighting is designed in layers.

Most homes are lit with a single layer — overhead fixtures on a switch. Luxury lighting design starts from a different premise: every room needs several layers of light working together, each doing a different job.

• Ambient Light — the general wash that fills a room and lets you move through it comfortably.
• Accent Light — light aimed at something specific: art, architecture, a fireplace surround, a wine wall.
• Task Light — focused light where work happens: a kitchen island, a reading chair, a vanity.
• Landscape Light — the layer outside the walls that extends the architecture into the grounds after dark.

When these layers are designed together — and controlled together — a room stops looking lit and starts looking finished. That is the difference between a house with light fixtures and a house with lighting design.

Ambient lighting sets the baseline.

Ambient light is the layer people notice least and miss most. It is the soft, even fill that keeps a room from feeling like a stage set lit by a single spotlight.

• Indirect Sources — cove lighting, soffit lighting, and up-lighting that bounce light off ceilings and walls rather than pointing it at people.
• Even Distribution — ambient fixtures are spaced to avoid hot spots and dark corners, not simply centered in the room.
• Low, Livable Levels — ambient light is almost never run at full brightness in the evening. It sits low, as a base for the other layers to build on.
• Dimming Is Not Optional — ambient circuits should dim smoothly from full to near-off without flicker or stepping. This is where cheap dimmers fail and quality control systems earn their keep.

Accent lighting creates depth.

Accent light is what separates a lit room from a designed room. It draws the eye to what deserves attention and lets everything else recede.

• Art and Millwork — picture lights and adjustable accent fixtures aimed to graze or wash a surface, not flatten it.
• Architectural Features — beams, stone walls, and vaulted ceilings read as intentional when lit from the right angle.
• Layered Contrast — a room lit only with ambient light feels flat. A small amount of accent light, aimed well, does more for the mood than doubling the ambient level.
• Invisible Fixtures — recessed and trimless accent fixtures disappear into the ceiling so the light is visible but the hardware is not, consistent with an Invisible Technology™ approach to the rest of the home.

Task lighting serves function.

Task light is the most practical layer — and the one most often under-designed. It needs to be bright enough to work by, positioned to avoid shadows and glare, and easy to separate from the rest of the room.

• Kitchen Islands and Counters — under-cabinet and pendant lighting on their own dimmable circuit, independent of general kitchen ambient light.
• Home Offices — layered task light near the desk that avoids screen glare, separate from any decorative fixture overhead.
• Closets and Vanities — higher color-rendering light suited to reading labels, choosing colors, and applying makeup accurately.
• Independent Control — task circuits should never be tied to a scene that also dims the ambient layer. Someone reading in a chair should not go dark when the room shifts to a movie scene.

Scenes, not switches.

The point of layering light is that it can be recombined instantly. • Flicker-Free Dimming — Lutron dimming hardware is matched to the specific fixture and bulb type, which avoids the buzzing, flickering, or premature bulb failure common with mismatched dimmers.
• Keypads, Not Just Apps — every scene should be reachable from a wall keypad. Phones die, apps update, guests do not know your passcode — a keypad always works.

• Coordinate with Sound — a lighting scene paired with background music, set through the same keypad, makes hosting effortless rather than something a host has to manage all night.
• Build In a Reset — a single scene that returns every room to baseline at the end of the night, rather than walking the house turning things off by hand.

Good lighting design is efficient by nature.

Efficient lighting is often framed as a tradeoff against design quality. In practice, the two reinforce each other — a well-layered, well-controlled lighting plan uses meaningfully less energy than a house full of always-on overhead fixtures.

• LED as Standard — modern LED fixtures use a fraction of the energy of legacy incandescent or halogen sources, with lifespans measured in years of nightly use rather than months.
• Dimming Saves Power — a dimmed circuit draws meaningfully less power than one run at full brightness, and most rooms spend most evenings dimmed.
• Occupancy and Scheduling — automated scenes turn things off reliably, which people rarely do consistently on their own.
• Fewer Fixtures, Better Placed — a thoughtfully designed lighting plan often uses fewer total fixtures than a grid of recessed cans, because each fixture is doing more deliberate work.

Design tips worth knowing.

• Design Lighting Before Drywall — lighting plans, especially cove and recessed layouts, are far easier and less costly to execute when planned during framing rather than retrofit after finish work.
• Avoid Symmetrical Overhead Grids — a room lit only from a centered grid of recessed cans looks flat under any control system. Layering matters more than fixture count.
• Match Color Temperature Across a Sightline — if a kitchen is visible from a living room, the two spaces should share a consistent color temperature, or the transition will look like two different houses.
• Plan for Real Use, Not Just Photos — a lighting plan should be designed around how a family actually lives in a space at 7pm on a Tuesday, not just how it photographs once.
