WiFi 7 (802.11be) finalized as a standard in 2024 and, by 2026, has become the default spec for premium routers, mesh systems, and flagship phones and laptops — while WiFi 6 and 6E remain common in mid-range gear and plenty of homes that don't need the newest tier yet. For a large estate, the honest answer is that both can deliver excellent WiFi; the difference shows up in specific, real situations more than in everyday browsing.

WiFi 7's headline feature, Multi-Link Operation, lets a single device use multiple bands at once — cutting latency and adding failover in ways WiFi 6 simply can't. That matters most in device-dense homes: video calls running alongside 4K streaming, whole-home audio, security cameras, and smart home traffic all competing for airtime at the same time.
For a household with a handful of devices and typical streaming and browsing use, a well-designed WiFi 6E network still performs excellently — the jump to WiFi 7 matters most in larger, busier, more device-saturated homes, which describes most of the estates we build for.
We spec WiFi 7 access points as the default on new-construction and major-renovation projects today, since the hardware cost premium is modest and the network is meant to last a decade. For an existing WiFi 6E network performing well, we don't recommend ripping it out purely to chase the newer standard.
You get the biggest gains — like Multi-Link Operation — only on WiFi 7-capable devices, but a WiFi 7 access point still serves older devices at their native WiFi 6/6E speeds, so there's no downside to upgrading the network first.
Often not necessary — a well-designed WiFi 6E network handles typical smaller-home device counts excellently. WiFi 7's advantages show up most in larger, device-dense homes.
Fully finalized — the IEEE 802.11be standard and Wi-Fi Alliance certification both completed in 2024, and by 2026 WiFi 7 is standard across premium networking product lines.
Access point placement and count. A single router, however new, can't cover a multi-story estate — proper whole-property WiFi depends on professionally designed access point placement regardless of which WiFi generation it runs.
